The Society for Human Resource Management conducted a study of employees and identified that there are 7 deadly sins that employers should avoid when conducting performance reviews:

  1. Don’t leave employees feeling slighted by conducting late evaluations
  2. Keep reviews relative and consistent throughout to avoid over-evaluation
  3. Don’t be too vague- Provide clear, supportive examples
  4. Focus on results that will improve productivity
  5. Extremes- Avoid words such as “never” and “always” 
  6. Make sure your comments match your numerical rankings to avoid any inconsistencies
  7. Stereotyping- Be objective to gender, age, etc.
